Having a goal to do a million push ups and chins seems a little monumental when you are only at about 35k. Found a Calvin Coolidge quote that kind makes you want to stay the course.
Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'press on' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
Anyway kept the holiday weight gain to about 2lbs-starting to notice the benefits of a couple hundred push ups/chins a day. I have started to notice the arms and shoulders are starting to round out a bit. Not sure it is noticeable enough for anyone else to notice yet-but I suppose thats not what the goal is about

Ironman Canada
Aug,20-28-1595,total 36008
We were off in Penticton for Ironman Canada. My son in law was running his first full length Ironman-he did great. Managed to keep up the push ups here and there. If you've never seen an Ironman live-it is quite the inspiration. Our daughter Steph did IM Canada last year and it is amazing there are people in their late 70's completing these things. I figured this year as-I'd already seen it once -some of the awe would wear off- but it didn't. There are some incredibly fit looking people doing the race- but I tell you there are many many people that to look at them on the street you would never guess they could do the whole course. Some of the finishers are out there for 16 hours of non stop physical activity. It is kind of a no excuses experience- when you see lots of people in their 50's, 60's and seventies out there- and people that are overweight-finishing that course-there aren't a lot of excuses left.

Congrats Jack Bravo

Congratulations to Jack Bravo from 1000 push ups -Jack had his baby son , born on Sunday, August 5, 2007. He is 7lbs 8oz.
Keep going with the goal Jack-go for the first birthday
Was away all week at a conference in Chicago. The push ups kind of suffered. Off on holidays tommorrow so hopefully will keep up the efforts.
For the Southern Alberta House we had a Rock and Roll Run,had over 500 runners not bad for a first race. The final numbers should be in tommorrow but it looks like we will raise a bit of money for operations. We had a great volunteer/staff committee working on our first run. The house got a lot of exposure on the race which is also really helpful in future fundraising efforts and our ability to attract more high calibre volunteers like we have now. Three television stations were at the race and will run segments tonight and tommorrow. One paper and one radio station were also in attendance. Ronald McDonald did his Go Active presentation and we had a GO ACTIVE 1km family walk in addition to the 5km and 10km races. It was a good fundraising week for the Alberta RMHs . At the Chicago conference RMHC global gave the Edmonton House a 300k cheque for the big house expansion we are embarking on.

Men's Health Fit
Push-ups/chin ups Aug 10-145,Aug 11-548 total 32801
This months Men's Health Magazine has an article " Are you Men's Health Fit". It lists five exercises and asks you how you stack up on each. To be Men's Health fit you have to be able to do over 49 push ups, 9 chin ups and 5 single leg squats. The other two tests you can find on their website-as I don't know what my one set max is on these other two tests. According to Men's Health I stack up on average on all three of these tests. Generally I can do sets of 25 to 30 on push ups, sets of 5 on chins and sets of two on pistol (one legged squats). Well something to aim for I guess.

McTofu

I have my email set up to recieve google alerts on " Ronald McDonald House"- always interested to see what kind of press and publicity the other houses throughout the world are getting. An interesting study popped up today.
The study found that toddlers found food wrapped in a McDonald's wrapper tasted better. It didn't matter if the food was burgers and fries or baby carrots and milk-toddlers still prefered it if it was in the familiar McDonald's wrapper. I am not sure if this is good news or bad news but at some level it looks like the McDonald's marketing people have a small opportunity to make an impact on childhood obesity. Tofu wrapped in a Big Mac Box?
Okay I'm not sure that the world is a better or worse place because of McDonald's -I work for Ronald McDonald House so I suppose I am a little biased towards the makes the world a little better place arguement. Nonetheless I think it is human nature to blame big corporations, or government or the establishment for the things we don't like about our lives. At some level we do have a choice whether to ask for the supersized fries or say give me the salad instead. If some smart marketing guru from McDonalds corp stumbles across this blog-I'll bet you a million bucks that I could eat strictly from the McDonalds menu for 90 days and not gain weight. I wouldn't need the million bucks myself-the Edmonton RMH is going to do a big expansion that will cost 8.5 million -a million dollar pledge towards this campaign would do the trick. Nutritionists would be rolling their eyes at this but at some level I have to believe in the calories in versus calories expended theory. Having self discipline is not easy-but not impossible. I am willing to believe that if I over do it one day on a fast food binge that I can burn off the calories by extracting myself from the couch and going for a run or doing a couple more push ups.
Studies like this I suppose are a good caution for parents, but I don't think they excuse us from making sure there is balance to our kids diets and that as parents we make sure our kids are not sedentary.

no birthday test
July 31-400,Aug2-205,Aug3-390,Aug,4-200 total-31306
Okay birthday came and went and I didn't test my max chin ups in an hour. I knew I was no where close to 700 in an hour so I am giving myself a little more time on this one (til Christmas as I mentioned in an earlier post). I am going to do a test to see if I am getting any closer in the next week or so. One of my gifts from the family is on order and should show up mid August- it is a TRX suspension trainer. Should keep the push ups interesting -you can do them suspended in the air-like you are on gymnast rings. Their website is : www.fitnessanywhere.com. On their site I found another interesting link to a site called www.bodyweightculture.com.
Remember if you want to donate on line to Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta you can do it securely at www.rmhedmonton.ca. Or you can donate online to the Southern Alberta House at www.rmhsouthernalberta.org .
