Managed to keep the push-ups going even on Christmas Day. Unless I can do 40k or so in the next few days -looks like I wont make the 100k goal for this year. What the heck it will make a good goal for next year. The kids all chipped together to buy Cathy and I an extended long weekend in vegas. We get on the plane Jan 1-looking forward to it. Lots to see in vegas (we're not big gamblers) so will try to keep the numbers up-but what the heck-January brings a new year-and new years are ripe for resolutions. Mine just wont start till the 5th.

Merry Christmas

Sore elbow still giving me a bit of trouble-but it seems to be clearing-Had some good days and some not so good. Well should hit 60k but the end of the year. Not the 100k number I was hoping for ,but 60k is still a lot of push ups and chin ups. Will have to see how the persistance lasts through the holidays. Hoping to get in a good number today-because tommorrow is Christmas and I will have better things to do than push ups. Merry Christmas

little elbow trouble

Been having a little trouble with my right elbow. Has made it difficult to do push ups, resulting in some missed days. Did some chin ups this morning-a little sore but it will do. I might take it easy for the next couple of days,in case it is an over-use injury. Found an interesting website -Jens Gym old style workouts. Address is http://jensgym.blogspot.com/. These crossfit folks do some serious workouts.

I live in a small town outside of Calgary-probably about 10,000 people live here. In town there is a business I frequent. Mostly I frequent this business because it is owned by a local family. The owner is always friendly and welcoming-feels like you are doing business with a friend instead of a corporation. This individual seems to provide a lot of support to the community-local teams and charities benefit from his business. I was talking with a friend about how friendly and community minded the business owner was. The friend told me the guy used to be the meanest cheapest SOB in town. I had never seen and couldn't imagine this fellow this way,but she told me that he had had a heart attack and a close call with death. I don't know how much of the story is accurate -kind of a local grinch story. I was in the guys store the other day and I casually mentioned that the weather seemed to be turning-"it's going to be a good day". His eyes caught mine and he said -"everyday is a good day". Given what his life change I knew he wasn't kidding, but I have spent days thinking about what he said and what it really meant. Everyday is a good day. Probably if we all thought about this all the time we would live much more purposeful lives and we would enjoy them way more. Best of the season to everyone reading this blog-and a special Merry Christmas to anyone supporting the Ronald McDonald House in their area.

cookies

It is getting to be that season again. One of the industrial hazards of working at a Ronald McDonald House is the baking that is always present in the house-comfort foods. In both houses we have some individuals and some groups who will come in once a month or once a week and bake up a storm. Around Christmas our bakers really ramp up and there is always lots to eat. Don't get me wrong -we love our bakers -and it is no accident that we want the aroma of cookies and bread wafting through the kitchen. One more way RMH feels like home. However for the staff-particularly new staff it is not uncommon to put on a bit of weight when you first start the job. Everybody puts on a bit of weight at Christmas-but at RMH the temptations are plentiful. My weight has already started to drift up a bit-time to start fighting it back down. I am determined this year to win the battle against the Christmas cookies. My weight is back up to 207-I am going to use fitday and push ups to make sure it doesn't get any higher. Simple plan-I'm just not going to bed each night until I have burned more calories than I have eaten. Yesterday was a pretty good day burned 1500 more calories than I ate. I'll keep you posted.
