Benjamin Disraeli: Action may not always bring happiness ... but there is no happiness without action.
Do you want to know how to do a one armed chin up? A handstand push up? A one armed handstand push up? Well there is a cool website:
http://www.beastskills.com/
The site has tutorials that show you how to work up to doing these feats and others. For me -I think I will stick to the regular push ups and chin ups for a while-but who knows what the future might bring. Clearly these things take some serious practice and some serious strength.
For anyone who wants to know how Usher got his abs. I found this post on the website below. Now to be honest I am a little to old to even know who Usher is, however I am sure with some laughter my kids could let me know. The article caught my attention because he routinely does 1000 crunches a day. Personally I am trying to build up a few more thousand push up days a week. The last time I did a thousand in a day my elbows were sore for days -so I am slowly building back up to it so I don't get some kind of injury that keeps me from working out at all

How does Usher get those abs?
Posted: Mar 24th 2008 3:46PM by Mary KearlFiled under: Fitness, Healthy Habits, Celebrities, Working In the Workouts, We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs, Celebrity Fitzness Report, Body Bloggers
Well, after doing some serious celeb snooping to pick AOL Body's Hottest Bodies I found out more than enough celebrity diet and fitness secrets. Some were so not That's Fit/AOL Body approved (over yo-yo dieting and super-scary liquid diet weight loss are some of the culprits among female celebs). But Usher's dedication to ab workouts is pretty inspiring. When I found out he does 1000 crunches a day, I was really impressed. A friend of mine blew that off saying that doing 1000 crunches is nothing. So I tried it out myself and got tired after 300. Oh well, 1000 is something to work up to.

The daily average for this year is 254 push ups/chin ups per day. I am getting close to the point were I will be averaging more than 100 per day more than I did last year ( about 160)-A little simple math and that is 36500 more push ups than last year. I am trying to reach the point were I am averaging about 300 push ups/chins a day. Weight has once again dropped below 200, starting to see some noticable changes in my core-beneath the layer of fat you can almost see that I actually have abs. Of course you have to be at exactly the right angle and the light has to be just so -but-a little more fat lose and I will almost look athletic.

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.
William James
I watched the first episode of Paul McKenna's new series on TLC
He has four simple rules (remember I have just seen one episode). They are:
When you are hungry, EAT.
Eat what you want, not what you think you should.
Eat CONSCIOUSLY and enjoy every mouthful.
When you think you are full, STOP eating.
I heard/saw this and thought well this is so simple it is brilliant -makes sense to me. But something just seems too simple about the whole strategy -seems a little like slick packaging and marketing more than fitness -diet advice. Although he would say it is not a diet. I looked at his UK based website(s). Seems pretty sound and common sensical-however I did some scrolling-I believe they call it "lurking" on the community boards and although his students-followers -whatever seem pretty convinced-it doesn't look like a lot of them report losing a lot of weight. Seems 20 pounds is a good number on the board. I found a website/author who seems to have the same take on Mr McKenna. Here is the first paragraph or so of the article-the link is below so you can read the rest if you want:
Something about Paul McKenna smacks of charlatan to me. I don’t know what it is, but he doesn’t seem like someone I want to trust. He has a new show on TLC and here are some highlights from the first episode. The thing that bothers me is how much this show feels like an infomercial. The clapping at the “appropriate” times and the weighing of the studio audience really feel like parlor tricks to me. The before and after pictures and the pants from a previous life are all the same things I’ve seen before.
http://www.starling-fitness.com/
Now I am suspicious -but his theories seem pretty straight forward. I will reserve judgement and I am sure if I am around when the second episode airs-I'm sure I'll give it a watch. Overall the presentation seems a little too "quick fix " to me. However that perspective should be taken with a grain of salt -anything approach that doesn't involve going to bed a little hungry and doing hundreds of push ups or chin ups is starting to seem a little "soft"-not quite hard core enough. Okay clearly I am becoming a little obsessed.
Push up numbers have been good this month. This year daily average so far is 251 push ups/chins a day-as opposed to about 160 per day last year.

As you may have noticed above the weight and bodyfat percentage jumped back up. This is of course because I jinxed myself by blogging about being below two hundred again. Of course I don't really believe this is true-I just need to trust the calorie count a little more-I know if I keep driving the numbers down I will pop up and down -but overall will go down.
I have been watching my grams of protein intake on fitday and I seem to be consistantly lower than the recommended amount for athletes. Not that I am much of an athlete-but I figure with all the push ups-my body probably needs as much as an athlete in training. I am thinking this might be why the bf percentage doesn't want to fluctutate that much. I am going to try to up the protein intake a bit. In keeping with my keep it simple strategy I am going to try to eat more protien rich foods-but suppliment with peanut butter. Yep you read it right -peanut butter. From timie to time I have read in Men's HEalth that a tablespoon of pb will stave off hunger and the desire to eat something more calorie ladden ( not that pb is that low in calories). I have also read on the internet that pb is the poor mans creatine. If you don't know what creatine is do an internet search-there are a lot of articles on creatine. Anyway I think a tablespoon here and there will up my protein a little and maybe keep me from eating something else that I might regret.

Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.Brian Tracy
Had three good days of push up numbers/chins. Last night thought I would take it a little easier. Still a little muscle soreness from the weekend. I am back below 200 again. Almost afraid to post the number because it always seems to jinx me. Really I have only lost about 9-10 pounds since New Years, however the last two or three pounds I have lost over and over again. Anyway works out to about 4-5 pounds a month lost, so I am not losing weight at light speed with my calorie counting/push ups regime. Nonetheless I am still eating all the junk I used to eat-just less of it on some days. It seems like on the days that I do big push ups/chin ups number-a couple of big number days in a row and my weight drops down. Okay this is probably not rocket science as coincidently on those days I usually work out longer and thus burn more calories.
Found an on-line Push up test. You plug in your sex,age and total push ups you can do and it gives you a score rating and the population average for your age. Here is the link:
http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/PushUps.html
For the record my total is a little higher than the population average-but regardless the test scores me as average.

Had two days with big numbers of push ups/chins and the shoulders are a little sore. I think it is just regular muscle soreness -but i might take it a little easy today-just in case. Well the weight finally dropped back down again. It has been hard to get back below the 200 pound barrier again. I don't know maybe there is something to that set point theory after all. Nonetheless I am not willing to abandon the idea that it is more about calories eaten versus calories burned than any other factor. I'm over 81,000 push ups and chins-going to push harder for that 100k point (maybe just not so hard today).

A collegue if mine asked why I was trying to do a million push ups/chins. I guess it is like someone who wants to run a marathon-it is not easy-not everyone could do it-or would do what is necessary to reach the goal. One million is a huge number. At my current rate it will take over ten years to achieve the goal. The first time I stumbled across the website
http://www.millionpushups.com/
The first thing I thought was wow -most people could not do that. The next thing that came to mind is-I could do that. It didn't take to long to get from :I could do that" to I will do that. In North America we tend to want things to come quick and easy to us. I have two University degrees( you wouldn't know it with my spelling -sometimes). Granted a University degree has some practical value when it comes to getting a job and all that. However one of the gratifying things about graduating is it takes several years of effort and a lot of work. This is what makes it valuable.
In my last post I promised to include the link for the 1000 push ups article. It was written by Richard West and the link is :
http://www.articlestree.com/fitness/doing-pushups-to-build-muscle-mass-and-boost-metabolism-tx282333.html. I have included the first paragraph from Rochard's article below. You've got to be impressed with anyone who can eat 5000-6000 calories a day and still lose bodyfat. Richard goes on in his article to explain how to build up to 1000 push ups, loss fat and gain muscle. His training sounds a little like mine -although it sounds like he is getting a little better results.
I am still working on pushing up the average push ups/chins per day. As I mentioned in my last post I averaged a little over 160 per day last year. Right now my daily average is a little over 240 per day. If I can drive that number up to 274 per day-that will work out to about 100,000 push ups a year.
Having spent many years doing many different workouts involving weights, cardiovascular machines, and calisthenics, I determined that the best way to build mass and boost metabolism is by doing pushups. Lots of pushups! After less than three months training, I was able to complete a one-thousand pushup routine in exactly 80 minutes. I gained 15 lbs of solid muscle mass, lost a considerable amount of body fat and consistently ate 5000-6000 calories daily.

I found an interesting article on someones blog. I will post the link in my next post ( I am out of town using the laptop-saved the blog in my favorites on the desktop). The fellow has worked his way to doing 1000 push ups a day. He reports that he has gained 15 pounds of muscle since he started. The blog describes a progression to getting in shape to do a 1000 push ups a day starting with doing about 200 every other day. As far as my own journey goes -last year I did an average of a little over 165 push ups or chin ups a day. This year I haved been averaging over 220 push ups or chin ups a day. Thing is when I started doing the push ups I felt like 200 a day was an awesome goal. I had thought if I could do 200 a day I would be in incredible shape. Now I am at the point where I feel like I am dogging it if I don't do at least 300 a day. Anything less than 300 feels lazy. I can do 300 in a little less than 15 minutes -so it isnt much of a workout anymore. (usually in sets of 10 -20 reps). right now I am trying to drive my daily average closer and closer to 1000 a day.

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will.Vince Lombardi
Well lack of will-or lack of willpower seems to be a factor for me these days. In January I started counting down calories ( total calories burned minus total calories eaten) to the point where I should weigh about 185. Overall I have lost about 7 or 8 pounds (depending on what day I weigh in-or what time of day). Most days I burn more than I eat.And most days I log a good number of push ups/chin ups. However I am finding it hard to get and stay below the 200 pound barrier. It doesn't appear to mysterious- I seem to have a habit of getting to the 200 mark and then having a day or so were I eat everything in sight and blow the calorie count in the wrong direction. Day before yesterday it was two helpings of lasagna at lunch followed by chinese food for dinner. The exercise is going great most days I am getting and hour or more of working out in. Mostly working out with Cathy and the kids-some push-ups and chins and some weights. Most days I do some push ups myself as well. I will stay the course-maybe try to bump up the push ups/chin up numbers a bit on a daily basis. Yesterday was a really good day-was aiming for 1000 during the day-but 665 will do.

This has got to be one of my favorite quotes. It is human nature to always want to hit a home run. We are often lead to believe that to be really successful it takes a really big effort or really big luck. However doing well in many areas of life is really often about the persistance to do lots of little things consistently-over and over. On the work front things are going well. We poured the concrete floor slab for the second floor on the Rmh is Edmonton. Should be openning the new suites to families early next year. Fundraising is going well -we have 6.1 million of the 11 million committed.

I had to post again today-because this morning I was back below the 200 pound barrier. Had about a one hour weights workout with Cathy last night and did 5 push ups between every set of weights we did. Ate fewer calories than I burned-would say it was exactly "clean eating". The UFA staff made dinner for the families at the house the night before last and there was plenty of leftovers---so great lunch yesterday-complete with mashed potatos, gravy, beef tenderloin etc etc. Still was able to keep the overall calorie count in the day below 2700.

I had to post again today-because this morning I was back below the 200 pound barrier. Had about a one hour weights workout with Cathy last night and did 5 push ups between every set of weights we did. Ate fewer calories than I burned-would say it was exactly "clean eating". fat loss has a memory?

This is a little more like it -back down to 201 in a couple of days. Fat loss must have a memory or something. I remember reading somewhere that muscle had a memory. The theory was that if you had gained a lot of muscle and become sedentary ( so that the muscle became less toned) that if you started working out again-you would gain the tone back much faster than you had the first time. Hoping to push back below the 200 mark again this week. Anyway on the workfront things are going fairly well. For the Edmonton expansion we have 6.1 million in pledges of the 11 million we need. Construction is well under way. Still need some serious fundraising but the progress to date has been good. On another note I found a press release for another guy who seems to have the same idea that I do. I can't claim to have done 10 million push ups-but here it is:
SCHERERVILLE, Ind., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- "Move over yoga, your competition has finally arrived," says Ted Skup, the new Dalai Lama of fitness. When it comes to harmonizing the body, mind and spirit, push-ups (not yoga) are fast becoming the fitness nirvana of choice. With some yoga instructors now charging $2,500 for a 30-day workout program, it's no wonder people are looking for a cheaper alternative -- like free! "Why should I pay some yogi $2,500 to help me become more flexible when I could go to Toys 'R' Us and buy the Twister game for $13.95?" laughs Skup. Right hand on red, left foot on blue.
"We have the making of a new cult following, gravitating towards push- ups," says the new fitness Dalai and author of the book "Death, Taxes & Push- Ups."
Skup is an authority on his subject, deciding to write his book only after officially doing more than 10 million push-ups. "My book is the first and only book ever dedicated entirely to the most explosive exercise on the planet -- push-ups!" he says.
Push-ups have always been perceived as a warm-up exercise until now. "This is not just an exercise, but a fitness lifestyle," Skup says. "My routines and formulas work wonders for men, women and even children of any fitness level. You'll soon find out why I call my push-up routine 'Horizontal Jogging.'"
Skup goes on to say, "As a new Dalai and spiritual leader in the fitness movement, I have a moral obligation to go after the 35-billion-dollar fitness industry." In his book he explains why the industry is clearly failing us with its bogus claims, magic bullets and quick fixes. Although the fitness industry may not want to hear it, push-ups are free, require no equipment, are totally portable, and there are no gimmicks. They work for busy executives as well as people with tight budgets.
Ted Skup is announcing today that along with his book he is not only taking this push-up revolution nationally, he's going global!
Skup's definition of good health is having a sense of well-being, and "Death, Taxes & Push-Ups" will be your guide to reaching that goal.

Earlier last week I was going to do a post. I was pretty happy to have weighed in at 198.5 lbs. The first time I had been below 200 in years. First time since university, maybe highh school that I had been that low. Anyway-went up to Edmonton for a couple of days and made a few too many trips to the breakfast buffet in the hotel and the price is evident on the scale. However I am still not quite over the high of getting below 200 and I know I can take these pounds right back off. The push up/chin up total cracked the 75k barrier so lets see how long it takes to get 100k. Today is Sunday so I am hoping to get a big push up number today and watch what I eat.

It was a fairly busy week with work -three cities in five days. This didn't help the eating and working out patterns. Since the last time I posted I have only brought the calorie count down a couple of hundred. I was feeling the need for a little bit of catch up yesterday so did 650 push ups and 40 chins (690). This week is pretty hectic as well-hopefully I will be a little better at keeping the push up/chins numbers higher and make some better choices off the menu's. Good news is I am probably less than a week away from 75,000 push ups and chins. After doing a day last month were I did 1000 push ups/chins in one day -days were I do 200 or less seem like I am dogging it. However the days where I do over 500 -I really feel it in my shoulders the next day. I'm going to try to get 300's most days with the occasional 1000 for the next little while-see if my body adapts. Last year I did a little over 61000 push ups/chins. This works out to a daily average 0f 168 per day. This year so far (in 61 days) I have done 13,209 push ups/chins for a daily average of about 216. If I keep this rate up I will do over 78,000 this year. I really believe it is pretty realistic to push this daily average up. Given my progress so far I think a daily average of 250 is pretty realistic.
