122 k

I am getting close to pre-holiday weight. According to my calculations on fitday -I only seem to be burning a few hundred more calories than I am taking in but the pounds are dropping off. The kettlebells must have a higher calorie burn than I have been assuming.Fitday doesn't have a category for kettlebells-so I have been using "weightlifting" in the activity section (about 7 calories per minute). Nice surprise anyway to be dropping weight faster than expected. The bodyfat percentage doesn't seem to want to move downward. I was reading that Micheal Phelps eats something like 12,000 calories a day-if I had time to work out 5 hours I day-I could eat that much as well-wouldn't that be great.

simple theory

Well my theory is that weight loss is simple -calories in versus calories out. My own little experiment doesn't seem to prove that it is that easy. I am going to try to update the graph over on the right with my weight according to fitday. As you will notice the trend line isn't always moving in the downward direction. I am still on holidays for a few more days, however dispite the inconsistent eating and exercising I am determined to drive the numbers downward on this graph. As a sidenote -fitday.com has made some upgrades to their site/software. There are some cool new features worth checking out. One of the new features allows you to take body measurements and track them over time. The site is a little quicker and easier to use than the previous version. It is definately worth checking out.

back from holidays

Was off on holidays with the family for a little over a week. Off to Ironman Canada -no I wasn't a participant,my daughter and son in law did the race. We went out to cheer them on and spend a week at the cabin on the lake. I just kept a running total of my push ups. I was hitting some pretty decent daily numbers in spite of being on holidays. The photo above is Cathy doing dips on the deck. We didn't have any workout stuff around so mostly we just did as many push ups dips and free hand squats as we could do in a day. Ate pretty much what I felt like a did a few too many wine tours-the weight popped up a bit but not as bad as usual on a vacation. Back to a regular diet today-sort of I am still off this week-so I may have the odd indulgence.

kettlebells a good addition

People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.”Zig Ziglar

I have certainly become a believer in kettlebells. Hopefully the weighloss can continue at this rate. As Pavel says on dragondoor.com-they hack the fat off without the dishonor of aerobics. The kettlebells are kind of like a hybrid of weights and aerobics. Good thing cause I kind of hate running. Still doing the push ups and chin ups-but these kettlebells are definately a good addition.

high metabolic cost?

Haven't been getting in as many push ups and chins as usual. I have been using the bowflex and kettlebells. The kettlebells are quite awesome. They must create a huge metabolic cost or something, using them for 15 minutes to a half an hour has me huffing and puffing and sweating like crazy. Funny thing is my core body temperature must be up for about an hour after I do them - can't stop sweating for a half hour or more after I stop. I am mostly just doig swings and jerks with them - but they are whipping my butt. I had put back on a few pounds but the kbs seem to have hacked about three pounds off in a week, and I have been eating like a pig. Still going to try to keep pushing the chin up and push up total up.

“I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.”Leonardo da Vinci

A little too much birthday weekend celebration -has me back up to 206.5- I say that almost like it is not my fault-like some outside source forced me to eat too many helpings of cake. No bother-I have a whole new arsenal of tools to help me take the pounds back off. Cathy bought me the Bowflex Extreme SE, The kids bought me yoga blocks, kettlebells and a bosu ball. I'd say I'm pretty set. It was like the ideal Dad birthday -all toys -no ties.
Of course I am still going to do push ups and chins-I will just now how a much more rounded routine. Still plan on making it to a million push ups and chin ups.

Push Ups to make a statement

Limitations live only in our minds. But if we use our imaginations, our possibilities become limitless.

Below is a news story from China- in which push ups are being used to make a political statement:

Chinese netizens rail against Great Firewall
Stephen Hutcheon August 1, 2008 - 12:26PM

The current fad in China for push-ups is not inspired by the approach of the Olympic Games; nor is it part of a campaign to improve physical fitness.
In a country that employs a vast bureaucracy to monitor all types of internet activity and where posting a comment critical of the authorities can land you in re-education camp, people have to choose their words very carefully.
So they resort to euphemisms to evade the cyber spies and skirt the automated keyword blocking tools which the Chinese authorities use to keep tabs on the online world.
When a Chinese blogger says "I'm just doing push-ups", it's actually a roundabout about way of attacking the regime without risking retribution.
The phrase came into use last month after a mob of 30,000 ransacked government offices in the town of Weng'an in far-off Guizhou province.
The people were venting their anger over the death of 15-year-old schoolgirl Li Shufe who was suspected of having been raped and then thrown into a river by her attackers and left to drown.
The accused, who were released after being questioned, were suspected of being related to a senior Communist Party officials.
That turned out not to be the case and three autopsies also failed to back up the rape claims. But the way the authorities reacted initially by trying to sweep the incident under the carpet gave rise to suspicions.
In the official version of events, police said one of the accused had earlier talked the girl out of jumping off the bridge after a late evening rendezvous.
At ten minutes past midnight, while still on the bridge, he started doing push-ups and as he was doing the third one he heard the girl cry: "I leave", followed by a splash.
"Doing push-ups" became a way for people to vent their anger over the incident and express their disgust at attempts to censor reports and stifle discussion about it on the internet.
People registered push-up domain names, created push-up ringtones and even began reposting bizarre photoshopped images of a a famous TV host doing naked push-ups at famous Chinese landmarks as a way of fuelling the push-up craze and maintaining the rage.
It's just on example of the extraordinary lengths to which Chinese internet users - netizens, as they are called - have to go to skirt the country's noose of censorship.
