As you may have noticed I had some days where I hit some pretty good daily numbers for push ups and chins. I was trying to see if I could sustain high numbers of push ups and chins for a week or more. I was thinking if I could do a week steady at numbers higher than 1600 a day, I might be able to take a run at making it to my goal of a million push ups and/or chins within a years time. All was going fairly well, most days it was taking me at least 90 minutes sometimes more to get over 1600 in a day. Somedays these totals were actually achieved over two workouts in a day. I did decide to ramp it back a bit for two reasons. The first reason was my elbow and shoulder were sore all the time. I figured I was likely risking an injury that could sideline me from my goal all together. The other reason to ramp it down a bit was just plain old boredom. Knowing that I was trying to do at least 1600 push ups and chins in a workout was a little daunting. After a few days it was getting harder and harder to get motivated for a workout. I realize that some days I did well over 1600 reps, but really once you get started it wasn't a big problem to keep going. I was just worried that I would start to avoid some workout days altogether. Anyway, I know I can hit high numbers for a few days in a row. I am going to build back up to 300 or so a day. My elbow is still a little sore at the beginning of a workout -so I might keep it around 100 or so reps a workout for a few more days. I might just through the odd 1000 rep day in here and there just to get my total a little closer to the million mark.

One Skinny Bastard Week

I had a better week for push ups and chins. Couple of days north of 1000 reps. Since returning from holidays I have gone a little bit over a week "meat free". It hasn't been too bad- no cravings. I am not sure if full "vegan is in the cards,but I think I could manage vegetarian with out a lot of problem. The skinny bitches are really against artificial sweeteners. I drink a lot of coffee (which incidently they are not too keen on either) so have used sweetners so that I don't drink hundreds of calories of sugar each day. Well last week was meat, this week I eliminated sweeteners. As per the "bitches" recommendations -I have been using molasses ( which kind of tastes like drinking a ginger snap every time you drink a coffee) and raw sugar. My weight is slowly going back down -post holiday feastfest- however not quickly. I will probably need to elimate a lot more crap from my diet to notice a big change. However eliminating meat makes you think a little more creatively about your meals. Or I should say Cathy has been a little more creative with our main ,sit down together as a family meal. Typically Friday night is fast food Friday-that will definately take a little creativity. Hitting a 1000 push ups and chins a day has been a bit of a challenge, but to hit a half a million by New Years I need to average 1432 push ups/chins a day-that is a tall order. I am going for it. I may need to ice my elbows and shoulders every night- but what's life without a challenge. Wish me luck.

I would like to make it to a half a million push up/chin ups by the end of this year. From where I am now to where I would like to be by year end -that means doing about 900-1000 push ups or chins a day. Last year I wanted to top out over a quarter million by year end-this meant doing about this many a day as well. To do this the challenge becomes not only physical ,but also a challenge of just finding enough time in the day. It is still early in the year, might not start posting one thousand push ups today or tomorrow but I am going to try to start ramping it up again.

A little closer to 250k

I had a couple of good chin up/push up days. Two days over 1000 chins/push ups. 250k here I come. Weather outside is aweful. Windchill is bringing the temp below minus 30 centigrade. We have had over 25 cm of snow over the weekend. It has been a good weekend to stay indoors and do a few extra workouts. Although we have spent a good deal of time outdoor shoveling, driving kids to work and even out Christmas shopping and out for dinner. Between all that we have been staying in-doors as much as possible.

500 push ups minimum

After reading the article below about the 53 year old guy who does a minimum of 500 or most days over 1000 push ups I am feeling a little bit like a panty waist. Shamed into feeling that if I really have a goal of doing a million chin ups/push ups -I better up the volume a bit. If a 53 year old can do 1000 push ups a day I can surely match his daily minimum. I have read the Jack LaLanne set a world record at 45 by doing 1000 push ups and 1000 chin ups in an hour and 22 minutes - so at 44 I suppose there is lots of hope left. Jhoon Rhee the man credited with bringing Tae Kwon Do to North America is reported to have been doing 1000 push ups a day when he was 71 ( I don't know how old he is now-the guy will probably live forever at that rate). Here's to lots of push ups for years to come

1000 push ups a day

I have a "google alert" set up for the words "push up". Yesterday I found the article below on ;
After reading it I am kind of feeling like I am wimping out on the push ups- and need to suck it up and post some bigger numbers.
One of my clients was telling me about her boss that does 1000 push ups every day. I asked her why he chose to do that many push ups each day and she said he had had back problems and this one of the things that helped him. I was amazed and also entrigued, so I thought I would ask him for his story…
“When I was about 35 I began having lumber disc problems which is hereditary as I am now at least the third generation to have exactly the same problem at about the same age. My back is pretty good now two surgeries later, but for several years before having surgery I was doing physical therapy and would several times a day need to get on the floor and do some stretching to relieve pain. (as an aside I would recommend that even once people have successful back surgery they never stop the back exercises, as I never miss a day and it helps a lot) As long as I was on the floor any way, I began to do a set of push ups each time as it made my back feel even better than just the therapy exercises. I discovered that, at least for me, it was a back friendly exercise. Over time I kept increasing the size of my sets and began doing them as a routine in the morning and at night as well. One week I was feeling good and set a goal of 500 which I easily achieved. Then the 500 successively grew to 1000. Now 18 years later and 53 years old I still do 1000 push ups almost every day. There are some days where I do more as 1200 or 1300 or more is not terribly unusual. But under virtually no circumstances will I go to bed without a minimum of 500 for a day. That is a bad day and rare, but it sets a minimum base line. About a year ago I set my current single day record of 2300. Although my single set record is 150, my normal range starts at 100 to 120 in the morning and then I work my way down on set size from there. The single most important key to having a routine like this is getting started with the first set each day. To force that discipline I roll out of bed and before I stand up, I get in my first set of at least 100. From there it is down hill and easy all day.
Certainly I do other exercise, I walk, swim, Nautilus, but push ups are my core mainstay and give me some exercise every day of the year no matter what is going on and it is a nice quick way to constantly stretch my back while I am at it. My back is doing fine, I feel ok, maintain a constant low weight and low blood pressure.”
